Materials
All
sets are made in African Blackwood. (The exceptions to this are
bellows cheeks and drone stock which are normally other woods).
Blackwood is very expensive and rather scarce, but it has the
finest tone potential of any wood known and has been used exclusively
by makers of woodwind instruments for over 170 years.
The metalwork on the pipes is brass and the trimmings are imitation
ivory. Alternative trimmings can be provided at extra cost. The
pipe bag
is hand-stitched leather dressed with neatsfoot oil. The bag cover
can be made in velvet, shepherd's plaid or tartan. Being dry-blown,
i.e. by bellows, the bag should not need replacing for many years.
This same principle applies to the reeds. As long as they are left
undisturbed a set of reeds should last for years.
